LLM Cost Optimization

Four AI coding tools running continuously against direct token APIs had produced a monthly bill that was no longer sustainable. RemSoft.Dev researched the actual usage, prototyped a routing layer, validated it under real workloads and migrated production. Eligible workloads moved to licensed, subscription-based runtimes, with transparent round-robin and quota-aware routing across multiple accounts. The existing tools needed no workflow changes and kept the same speed and usability. The result was approximately a 1,000× reduction in token cost and monthly savings measured in tens of thousands of dollars, while demand was distributed reliably across the available capacity.

Key Challenges

Client: Software company running 4 AI coding tools

Approach: Usage research → routing prototype → validated migration

Result: ~1,000× token-cost reduction

Developer impact: None - same tools, same speed

The project faced several key challenges:

  • Cost without control: Token-metered APIs scale cost linearly with agent activity; four always-on tools multiplied it.
  • Invisible to developers: Any solution that changed how engineers worked would have failed adoption - routing had to be transparent.
  • Reliability across capacity: Distributing demand across runtimes and accounts needed quota awareness so no single pool was exhausted.

Results

  • ~1,000× lower token cost
  • Tens of thousands of dollars saved monthly
  • Quota-aware multi-runtime routing
  • Zero workflow change for developers
