MCP Bridge for Local LLMs

RemSoft.Dev built an MCP platform with two components. A dedicated test framework evaluates MCP tool quality and reliability with cloud coding agents including Claude and Codex. A separate bridge enables local models running through Ollama, ONNX and vLLM to use sandboxed files, GraphRAG and Code-RAG tools without depending on native MCP behavior. Tests with models up to 32 GB showed up to 10x higher task effectiveness through the bridge. The system was then tuned over time on real software projects, and it now serves the same tool catalog to cloud and local agents inside Dew Flow, our multi-agent development orchestrator.

Key Challenges

Client: RemSoft.Dev platform, used on client projects

Components: MCP test framework + local LLM bridge

Models: Ollama, ONNX, vLLM - up to 32 GB

Stack: .NET, MCP, GraphRAG, code-RAG

The project faced several key challenges:

  • Local models and MCP do not mix well: Smaller local models handle native MCP tool calls poorly. The bridge gives them the same tools without depending on native MCP behavior.
  • Measuring tool quality: A tool that works once is not a reliable tool. A dedicated test framework measures quality and reliability with Claude and Codex.
  • Safe access: Agents work with sandboxed files, GraphRAG and code-RAG - never the open file system.

Results

  • Up to 10x higher task effectiveness through the bridge
  • Local models on Ollama, ONNX and vLLM using the full tool catalog
  • Test framework for MCP tool quality and reliability
  • Tuned on real software projects

Up to 10x

higher task effectiveness for local models through the bridge.

32 GB

largest local model tested.
