AAC Communication Software

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) covers the devices, systems and strategies that replace or support natural speech for people with communication disorders. For an established assistive-technology company, RemSoft.Dev built AAC software on C#/.NET and the Windows 10 SDK, integrating Tobii eye-tracking hardware so users can compose speech with their gaze, and AI-based word prediction to speed communication. For a person using a communication aid, the software is their voice - any lag or failure is an immediate loss of the ability to interact with the world - so reliability, accessibility for users with limited motor control, and a stable platform for continuous updates and new languages were the defining requirements. The product shipped on desktop and mobile over two years, delivered by a senior developer, a middle developer and a project manager.

Key Challenges

Client: Assistive-technology company, UK

Duration: 2 years

Team: 3 - senior developer, middle developer, PM

Platforms: Desktop and mobile

The project faced several key challenges:

  • Accessibility and inclusion: An interface that remains fully usable for people with limited motor skills - navigable with minimal effort, including by eye gaze alone.
  • Real-time reliability: The software is the user's voice. Lag or a crash is not a bug, it is silence - uptime and responsiveness were non-negotiable.
  • Natural interaction: Moving beyond pre-recorded phrases: word prediction that learns from the user's behaviour to make communication faster.
  • Platform stability: An architecture that supports continuous updates and new language integrations without disrupting existing users.
